Consumer Action staff at the fairCommunity Outreach Manager Jamie Woo, along with support staff Kinny Li and Cui Yan Xie, attended the San Francisco Chinese New Year Community Street Fair on February 23rd and 24th. Attracting more than 20,000 residents and tourists, the fair serves as an outreach venue for local businesses and community agencies serving Chinese consumers.
Despite terrible weather conditions, CA staff served more than 1,800 fair participants in two days, answering more than 150 questions on various consumer issues and providing individual referrals to state consumer protection agencies and social services organizations. In particular, Chinese immigrants that approached CA’s booth were interested in learning more about how to rebuild their credit, and avoiding telemarketing fraud and ID Theft.

Fair participantsFrom reviewing consumer rights to distributing brochures and educational materials, CA’s booth provided a wealth of knowledge. On the second day of the fair, many visitors came back with their families and friends to obtain more information. CA’s How to Complain guide in Chinese was the most requested brochure, along with Senior Fraud, Do Not Call, and ID Theft.

Consumer Action's booth Fair participants commended CA for its continued efforts to reach out and educate the Chinese community not only through our efforts at the fair but also by providing free multilingual materials and information through radio shows and TV appearances.
